Street Beat: Guide To Donating Used Items To Detroit Charities

On this week's Street Beat, host Jill Washburn talks about seasonal cleaning/organizing and where to donate all the usable items that families might discard.  First, Jill talks with Bill Brazier from The Society of St. Vincent de Paul about donating furniture, the current trends in thrift shopping, and their current need for gently used coats for their coat drive.

Up next, Jill chats with Joyce Russell from Habitat for Humanity's Re-Store about the used, salvaged and new items that they carry in their stores.  From building supplies to furniture to appliances and more, individuals in their programs, and the public-at-large, can score some great deals on home improvement items at Habitat's Re-Store.  Joyce tells viewers what items are, and aren't, accepted as donations.

Then, Jill talks to Cheryl Bow from Dress for Success about donating women's suits and work appropriate clothing and accessories. They discuss how looking the part can really help a job candidate "feel the part" and land a job.  They also talk about the training that Dress for Success offers their clients, and how the effects of one woman landing a good job trickle down through families and communities.

Finally, Bethany Phillips of Pregnancy Aid sits down with Jill to talk about how "The Mom Network" can help underprivileged moms and moms-to-be. The discussion focuses on what items are most needed, what items are not accepted, and how a mom in need can get assistance.
