Street Beat: Fundraisers And Community Projects

This week on Street Beat, host Roxanne Steele focuses on a few of the many charity walks and projects going on in the Detroit Metro area in the next couple of weeks.  First up, Roxanne talks with Christopher Keyes from AIDS Walk Detroit. They talk about how the walk, which is in Royal Oak on Sunday, has grown over the last couple of decades and how the funds it raises are used in the community to raise awareness of AIDS/HIV, educate the public, and assist those dealing with the disease.

Then, Roxanne talks with Linda Riggs from the Rochester Area Neighborhood House about their upcoming Scare Away Hunger 5k walk/run on October 26th.  They discuss the on-going need for food and support in the area, and how Neighborhood House also provides other support services to assist families, help job-seekers, and how they aim to return their clients to self-reliance.

Roxanne's next guest is Abby Stonerook from the American Cancer Society. Abby talks about how the ACS has a new twist on their Relay for Life fund-raisers called Bark for Life.  Roxanne and Abby discuss the concept of how "man's best friend" can be a cancer a patient's best friend, and how they honor that relationship at Bark for Life, and they tell viewers how they can get involved in the next Bark for Life in Canton on September 20th.

Roxanne's final guest is Rev. Rebecca Wilson from the Detroit Renaissance District of the United Methodist Church. Becky's group is leading the charge for a day of improvement across Detroit on October 4th. Becky has assembled an army of volunteers to repair homes, clean alleys, feed the hungry and so much more, and she tells Roxanne what is still needed and how viewers can contribute.
