Straight 'A' High School Student, 3-Sport Star, Dies In His Sleep

GRANDVILLE, Mich. (WWJ) -  An outstanding academic high school student and star athlete died in his sleep hours before playoffs in a state hockey tournament.

Ryan Fischer of Grandville was a straight-A student and co-captain of the high school's hockey team died from complications of an enlarged heart according to the Lansing State Journal.

Fischer's team is playing Detroit Catholic Central at Compuware Arena Friday night in the Division 1 semi-finals of the state hockey tournament.

The 17-year-old was accepted into the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

A three-sport star, Fischer was also the captain for the baseball and football teams.

The Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) website noted that Fischer also was to receive an MHSAA Class A Scholar-Athlete Award later this month and planned to study aerospace engineering at West Point.

"Our staff enjoyed knowing Ryan as an engaging member of the MHSAA Student Advisory Council for two years, and we grieve his loss with the entire Grandville community," MHSAA Executive Director Jack Roberts said.

Fisher held roles in a number of additional leadership initiatives. He served four years on Grandville's student government executive board and also on the school's Leadership Team and his church's youth leadership council.

A decision to play tonight's hockey game as scheduled was made after conversations between Fischer's family and Grandville's administration according to the MHSAA website.
