'Step Out' To Fight Diabetes, Saturday At The Detroit Zoo

DETROIT (WWJ) - According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, 29.1 million people in the nation have diabetes — which makes it likely that we all know someone living with disease.

Today, a longtime Detroit radio voice is speaking out about his struggle with the chronic illness.

George Moore, 57 — whose smooth tones you may recall from Smooth jazz format — was diagnosed with diabetes in his 30s.

"I started out on pills, and just worked my way through different various medications," Moore told WWJ Newsradio 950's Stephanie Davis. "And the thing is for me, as with anything you do that is gonna change your life, you have to get your mind around it first."

Moore, who gets dialysis treatments three times a week, will be heading up "Team Silk" at the American Diabetes Association's Step Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes event on Saturday, Sept. 13, at the Detroit Zoo in Royal Oak.

Registration begins at 8 a.m., with the event program starting at 9 a.m.

The Step Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes is the ADA's signature fundraising walk. Taking place for more than 20 years, it's raised more than $175,000,000 to fight diabetes.

Spokesman Mitch Lenett, says it's no accident walking is the fundraising activity of choice.

"You know, walking is one of the best methods of exercise, and exorcise is such a crucial part of living with diabetes, and that's Type One and Two," Lenett said. "It's just a lifestyle thing, and it really does help control blood glucose."

Lenett and his daughter Carly are both living with Type One diabetes.
