Statistics Show Breast Lifts Growing More Popular Than Implants

DETROIT (WWJ)  - New statistics show a growing number of women are opting for breast lifts as opposed to implants when it comes to cosmetic surgery.

According to new numbers from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, breast lifts have grown by 70 percent — twice the rate of implants, since 2000.

Last year, for the first time, there were more than 90,000 lifts performed in the U.S., said Society President, Dr. Robert Murphy.

"The best person to undergo a breast lift is someone who doesn't necessarily want to make her breasts bigger," Murphy said. "Instead, she wants to have a more youthful breast, by just using the tissue she already has."

According to the ASPS, the older women get, the more likely they are to opt for lifts. The new statistics show women between the ages of 30-54 made up nearly 70 percent of the breast lift procedures performed in 2013.

Women in their 30s get the most implants, but lifts are performed more often on women over the age of 40.

Many who opt for lifts, said Dr. Anne Taylor, are moms.

"I think nowadays women come to us and they realize they've had children, their breast volume has decreased, and they have sagging," Taylor said. "And they have to have a lift to put the breasts back up where they're supposed to be."
