State To Take Bids To Rebuild Burned Ionia County Bridge

KEENE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — Plans are moving forward to rebuild a historic covered bridge that burned down in Ionia County's Keene Township.

WOOD-TV reports that the Michigan Department of Transportation is taking bids for the reconstruction of Whites Bridge over the Flat River.

It was more than 140 years old when the bridge burned July 7, 2013. Authorities have said someone doused the bridge in gasoline before setting it on fire. No arrests have been made.

The Whites Bridge Historical Society has raised more than $475,000 through grants and donations to rebuild the span.

The bridge was about 15 miles east of Grand Rapids and crossed the Flat River on Whites Bridge Road, between Belding and Lowell.
