State Police To Target Aggressive, Drunken Driving

DETROIT (AP) — State police troopers patrolling Michigan roadways this weekend are cracking down on aggressive and drunken driving as part of a national initiative to reduce traffic injuries and deaths.

Operation C.A.R.E. — or Combined Accident Reduction Effort — Lifesaver Weekend runs through Monday night.

State police Lt. Michael Shaw says troopers also will be looking for drugged motorists and drivers not wearing seatbelts.

Operation C.A.R.E. began in 1977 as a collaborative effort between state police in Michigan and Indiana. It now includes state and highway patrol agencies in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Ontario Provincial Police, Quebec Police Force and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
