Update: 17-year-old shot while driving on I-94 near Wayne Road
ROMULUS, Mich. (CBS DETROIT) - State police say a 17-year-old and his vehicle were struck while driving on westbound I-94 near Wayne Road Monday night.
State police say the 17-year-old male driver of a KIA and his juvenile female passenger had entered the freeway at Middlebelt Road after leaving the city of Inkster when a dark-colored vehicle sped up to get next to them.
The suspect driver then fired shots, striking the 17-year-old and the vehicle. MSP says this caused the driver to lose control and go off the road.
Another vehicle, that was not targeted, was also struck, but the driver was not shot.
"The driver of the KIA was self-transported to a local hospital in serious condition," said MSP. "The female passenger was not struck. The KIA was also reported stolen."
State police say the 17-year-old and juvenile were turned over to their parents.

State police announced Tuesday they would be closing westbound I-94 near Wayne Road to search for evidence in connection to a report they received Monday night.
At about 8:45 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 21, Michigan State Police received a report of a shooting or a traffic crash on westbound I-94 near Wayne Road.
According to MSP, there were no known injuries, and they were investigating the incident.
Then, at about 10:07 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 22, MSP released another update and said troopers would be closing the westbound lanes of the freeway in that area to search for evidence as they determined the incident was not random and not a crash.
