'Spirit Of Detroit' Statue Getting Big Michigan State Jersey

DETROIT (AP) - The "Spirit of Detroit" statue in downtown Detroit is getting a new look in honor of Michigan State's football team.

A crew on Monday plans to put a big jersey on the 26-foot-tall bronze statue outside the Coleman A. Young Municipal Building.

The third-ranked Big Ten champion Spartans play second-ranked Alabama in a national semifinal at the Cotton Bowl on Dec. 31.

Michigan State says it marks the first time the "Spirit of Detroit" statue has worn a Spartans jersey.

The statue in the past has been draped in oversized jerseys of the Detroit Tigers, Pistons, Red Wings and Lions in honor of the teams' championship bids.
