Something Fishy Happening In Detroit's New Center Area

DETROIT (WWJ) - Some of the best fish in Detroit are being caught in an area just north of the Fisher Building.

The Central Detroit Christian Farm and Fishery is up and running in a former liquor store in the New Center Area.

"We have about (1,340) square feet of growing space," Manager Antony Hatinger told WWJ Newsradio 950's Marie Osborne.

This operation is completely self-contained.  The hundreds of growing Tilapia fish in the buildings basement produce the fertilizer for the growing operation upstairs, Hatinger explained.

"We are currently producing Basil, Cilantro...," he said.

With in a few weeks the Tilapia will be ready to harvest for market. Eventually, both products will be available for the public to buy at Eastern Market.

The CDC hires local residents to work in the farm and fishery with hopes to have similar operations around the city in the future.  Fore more information, CLICK HERE.
