Snyder Signs 180-Day Limit To Gather Ballot Issue Signatures

LANSING (AP) - Gov. Rick Snyder has signed legislation enforcing a strict 180-day time limit to collect more than 250,000 valid signatures to place ballot initiatives before voters statewide.

It's unclear if Tuesday's action applies to MI Legalize, which is trying to legalize marijuana for recreational use in Michigan.

MI Legalize has turned in thousands of signatures that were collected beyond the 180-day time limit. But it's trying to use those older signatures to count toward the ballot signature requirement, which Michigan law technically allowed before Snyder signed legislation fixing a firm 180-day limit.

Secretary of State spokesman Fred Woodhams has said that office would review the legislation to see if it can be applied to discount signatures MI Legalize has turned in to the elections bureau.
