Skier Crashes, Dies At Crystal Mountain In Northern Michigan

THOMPSONVILLE, Mich. (WWJ/AP) - A 58-year-old man has died while skiing at Crystal Mountain in northern Michigan.

Crystal Mountain, a resort in Benzie County, says the Traverse City man was racing Friday afternoon when he lost control and slammed into a tower that makes snow. The crash occurred on the intermediate-level "Cheers" downhill trail.

Officials say the man was wearing a helmet at the time. Ski Patrol arrived within minutes and began providing medical care until EMS first responders arrived. However, paramedics were unable to revive the man and he was pronounced dead.

The man's name wasn't immediately released, but resort officials say he was a regular skier.

"Our hearts and deepest sympathies are with the friends and family who have suffered this sudden loss," says Brian Lawson, director of public relations at Crystal Mountain, said in a statement. "This was a familiar face to Crystal and we have reached out to the family and will continue to offer our support just as we will to our ski patrollers and employees who have been touched by this tragic event."

Following the accident, the course was closed for the remainder of the day. The Cheers downhill trail was reopened for skiing and snowboarding on Saturday.

The accident remains under investigation.
