3 Dead In Six-Car Accident At 5 Mile And Levan In Livonia

LIVONIA (WWJ) -- The Wayne County Medical Examiner's office says that three people were killed Monday afternoon in a six-car pileup at Five Mile Road and Levan in Livonia.

Police say the crash began when a westbound vehicle driven by an 80-year-old Livonia man drifted over the centerline and struck a vehicle traveling in the opposite direction, which was driven by a 67-year-old Redford woman.

A passenger in the second vehicle, an 88-year-old Livonia woman, died at the scene.

The man was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. The Redford woman was also taken to the hospital, where she later died.

Multiple other vehicles were involved in the crash, and police say some occupants had minor injuries.

Names of those involved were not released.

Five Mile was closed at Levan for several hours while authorities conducted an investigation.

Livonia resident Mark Harris described the scene.

"Six cars involved, starting from the intersection, going eastbound about 70 yards. And there's two cars in the intersection, there's another two cars up at the BP, and then another two-car broadside accident right in front of it," he said. "There's like three accidents...at one scene."

The accident remains under investigation.
