Singer, Widow Of Marcus Belgrave Holding Benefit Concert
DETROIT (AP) - The widow of internationally acclaimed jazz trumpeter Marcus Belgrave has launched a scholarship in his name with a benefit concert featuring some of his well-known protégés.
Singer Joan Belgrave will be joined at the March 10 concert in Detroit by several musicians influenced by her husband, including James Carter, Geri Allen and Marion Hayden. The concert at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History is co-sponsored by the Kresge Foundation, which named Marcus Belgrave its Eminent Artist award in 2009.
Tickets range from $25 to $100, and proceeds go to the scholarship fund. Joan Belgrave says it's designed for young musicians and aims to continue the mentoring her husband did throughout his life.
Belgrave graced stages and studios with Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Dizzy Gillespie, Joe Cocker and Motown artists, and served as professor or visiting artist at numerous institutions.
He died last year of heart failure.
