Shelby Township Police Seek Tips In Theft Of $28,000 Pounds Of Nuts; Post Squirrel Mugshot

SHELBY TOWNSHIP (WWJ/AP) - The squirrel is not a suspect, Shelby Township police say, having a little fun while asking for help from the public to catch a crook who swiped roughly 28,000 pounds of packaged nuts.

A truck and trailer packed with 18 pallets of walnuts and other snack nuts were taken the weekend of June 27, police say. The truck and trailer were found July 1 in Detroit, but the cargo — nuts worth more than $128,000 — was gone.

The Shelby Township Police Department on Tuesday issued an appeal for information on its Facebook page, posting a mug shot of a squirrel along with details of the case, adding: "Note: The squirrel is not a suspect. It's just a picture. Used to draw attention. Please do not call in squirrel sightings."

Anyone with information on this theft is urged to call 586-731-2121 ext. 315 and speak with Det. Lt. Schmittler.

Police in the Macomb County community have had a few noteworthy animal encounters recently, rounding up a goat in a parking lot and capturing a stray pig.
