Senate Panel OKs Concealed Guns In Schools, 'Gun-Free' Zones

LANSING (WWJ/AP) - People with concealed-carry permits could carry guns inside schools and other "pistol-free" areas under legislation advancing in Michigan's Legislature.

Two gun bills have cleared a Michigan Senate committee impacting guns in schools. WWJ Lansing Bureau Chief Tim Skubick reports one would ban open carry of weapons in schools and daycare centers the second would allow concealed weapons inside the schools.

Many in the education lobby saying they did not want open carry or concealed weapons in schools according to Skubick.

Republican-led Senate Judiciary Committee passed the bill on a 4-1 vote, with the lone Democrat voting against, decided they would go with this hybrid version of the bill sending it to the Senate floor.

Should the bills clear the Senate - they face a veto from Republican Gov. Rick Snyder who has said he doesn't want guns in any schools.

In 2012, Snyder vetoed similar legislation because there was no provision for local schools districts to opt out.

Supporters say concealed weapon permit holders could prevent mass shootings like the recent attack at an Oregon community college. Opponents, including many school superintendents, say the bill would make schools less safe.

Under state law, people who have concealed pistol licenses are not allowed to carry concealed weapons at schools, except while dropping off or picking up children.
