Seeking Funds For Facility, Hazel Park Man Runs Animal Rescue Through His Home

HAZEL PARK (WWJ) -- One Metro Detroit man loves animals so much, he's decided to personally take on the homeless animal problem.

Barry Duchene has opened a no-kill animal rescue he named New Directions, which recently got approved for a 501 (c) (3) non-profit status. Unable to afford a building to house animals in, Duchene is running the shelter out of his home in Hazel Park.

"It is very challenging, but it's well worth it," Duchene said. "We take surrendered, unwanted, abused animals and through our adoption process -- and adoption contracts -- we find them safe, loving homes that they will hopefully spend the rest of their days in."

Duchene said that would also like to one day run a thrift store to help support his animal rescue -- along with a kennel, grooming salon and bathing station for the animals.

"With me doing this out of my home, I've had to turn away several dogs for lack of room and it haunts me every day," Duchene said.
