Search For World Record Cats Missing After Fire Comes To Tragic End

FARMINGTON HILLS (WWJ) - A sad outcome in the case of two world record cats who were missing for more than a month after a house fire in Farmington Hills.

Arcturus, the tallest cat in the Guinness Book of World Records, and Cygnus, the cat with the world's longest tail, were inside their Farmington Hills home when it was destroyed by fire November 12.

It took weeks for crews to search the rubble, and it wasn't until the final room of the basement was excavated that it was discovered the cats had remained hidden during the fire and died from smoke inhalation.

Owners Will and Lauren Powers lost everything in the fire, but say the only thing that mattered to them were the cats.

"They were best friends in life and it gives us a small amount of peace that they were together at the end of their amazing journey on this earth," the couple wrote in an Instagram post. "We are forever grateful for the time we were given to love them."

The Powers say two cats, Sirius and Yuki, remain missing.

Those wishing to help are being asked to make a donation to the Ferndale Cat Shelter, where Arcturus was an ambassador.

Arcturus holds the Guinness World Record for being the tallest domestic cat, measuring at about 19 inches (48 centimeters). Cygnus is the domestic cat with the world's longest tail, measuring at more than 17 inches (43 centimeters).
