Runners Test Out New Stretch Of Grand Haven Highway Before It Opens

GRAND HAVEN (AP) — Some runners received the chance to test out a new stretch of highway in western Michigan before it opens to vehicle traffic.

About 300 people participated in Saturday's "M23.1k Run." The 14.3-mile event started and ended at Robinson Elementary School in Grand Haven on Michigan highway 231.

The Muskegon Chronicle reported people were invited to walk or ride their bikes on the highway after the registered run.

The highway stretches 7 miles through rolling countryside and over the Grand River. Ottawa County worked with the Michigan Department of Transportation, the Grand Haven Running Club, Robinson and Crockery townships and others on the event.

Proceeds from the event go to Ottawa County's non-motorized pathway system, a collection of trails commonly known as bike paths.
