Rowdy Crowd Clashes With Cops On UD Mercy Campus [VIDEO]

DETROIT (WWJ) - A spokesman for University of Detroit Mercy insists it "wasn't a brawl" — but a couple of people were handcuffed after a wild fight broke out on campus over the weekend.

In raw video sent by a UDM student to WWJ Newsradio 950's Laura Bonnell, it's clear multiple men and women took part in the altercation that eventually involved police at around 5:45 p.m. Sunday.

Witnesses told WWJ that, following a cheerleading competition inside Calihan Hall, there was an argument between two girls. When the girls' mothers got involved, things escalated.

According to UDM, it all happened to take place during an event held by the Detroit Police Athletic League (PAL), which had rented space at the university.

Detroit police say they were not called to the scene, but DPD officers who were there for the PAL event helped calm things down, with UDM Public Safety assisting.

A UDM spokesman said there were no arrests and no one was hurt. They're continuing to investigate the incident.
