Roof Repair Crew Sets Fire To Westland Nursing Home

WESTLAND (WWJ) - Residents of the Four Seasons Nursing Center in Westland will spend the night back inside after a fire an evacuation on Wednesday.

According to Assistant Fire Chief John Adams, flames broke out as workers were making some repairs to a roof of the home on Newburgh south of Joy.

"Part of that repair involved a torch, and heating up the tar and the rubber membranes they have to seal correctly," he told WWJ Newsradio 950's Sandra McNeil. "That torch subsequently ignited some combustible material."

Adams says the fire was put out fairly quickly and no one was injured.

Karen Watkins of Wayne — whose mother Ella Teeples is a resident — got worried when she heard reports of the news. Frustrated when no one at the center would give her information over the phone, she rushed to the scene.

"All that went through my mind was that my mom was maybe hurt, or her area was on fire; which yes it was her area, but it was not her room or anything," Watkins said.

Residents of the damaged west wing have been moved to another area for the time being.
