Roof On Ford Field Stadium Getting Major Makeover

DETROIT (WWJ) - Work continues throughout the day to airlift tons of roofing material on the top of Ford Field for a repair-and-upgrade project starting next week. A helicopter is making 160 lifts all day to move two truckloads of material in place.

Director of facilities Fred Reddig says it's one part of making the stadium more energy and weather efficient.

"So we are putting new LED lights in the stadium, as well, on the field, that should be completed about the end of July as well -- so by football season fans should experience a great LED lighting on the field and players should love it as well," said Reddig.

He says there has been deterioration in the roof due to winter and harsh weather in general. And the plan is to repair rather than replace the roof.

The LED lighting is expected to cut the energy used for lights at Ford Field by more than 50 percent.
