Rock Icon David Bowie Dead At 69

NEW YORK (WWJ/AP) - David Bowie, the innovative and iconic singer whose illustrious career lasted five decades, has died after a battle with cancer. He was 69.

Representative Steve Martin said early Monday that Bowie died "peacefully" and was surrounded by family.

The statement read: "While many of you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the family's privacy during their time of grief."

Michigan native Iggy Pop is sharing his memories of David Bowie.

The Stooges lead singer says via Twitter that, "David's friendship was the light of my life. I never met such a brilliant person. He was the best there is."  The pair collaborated on two albums in the 1970s, including "Lust for Life."

No more details were provided.

Bowie turned 69 on Friday, the same day he released a new album called "Blackstar."
