DETROIT (WWJ) - Detroit police are searching for three men who drove their vehicle into the front of a dollar store during a robbery on the city's east side.

The incident occurred early Wednesday morning at the Family Dollar store on Gratiot Avenue near Glenwood Street, just south of 7 Mile Road.

Police say three men smashed their pick-up truck through the store's front windows. Once inside, the crooks went for the money. Reports say the thieves made off with a safe containing perhaps as much as $5,000.

Investigators are now reviewing the store's security footage and are asking for the public's help in identifying the suspects. Physical descriptions of the suspects were not immediately released, although police say the suspects' vehicle is expected to be heavily damaged.

The store was closed at the time of the robbery.
