River Raisin Battlefield Park Hosting Native American Talks

MONROE, Mich. (AP) - The River Raisin National Battlefield Park in southeastern Michigan is hosting a Native American speaker series during the next two months.

The Monroe park kicks off the series Thursday with a talk about the Potawatomi by Joshua Steedman. Another is scheduled for Saturday on the Odawa/Ottawa by Adam Franti.

Two more events are set for July.

The purpose of the series is to discuss the Native Americans' role in the War of 1812 and their forced removal after the war.

The national park's mission is to preserve, commemorate and interpret the January 1813 battles of the War of 1812 and their aftermath in the region. That included the removal of Indians from the Northwest Territory.

The River Raisin National Battlefield became a national park in 2010.
