Residents Run For Safety As Apartments Go Up In Flames

DETROIT (WWJ) - Dozens of residents on Detroit's west side ran for safety after their apartment building suddenly went up in flames.

The fire happened around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the 11000 block of Greenfield, just south of Plymouth Road. Most of the fire damage was in the rear of the complex, and authorities said the blaze appears to have started in several different spots on the third floor.

None of the residents were injured as fire crews pumped water into the burning building, but several residents will not be allowed back into their apartments.

The American Red Cross quickly responded to the scene to help displaced families with temporary shelter, along with food and clothing.

Officials said a cause of the fire remains under investigation.
