Attorney Confirms Complaint Filed Against Tigers Pitcher Evan Reed

DETROIT (WWJ) - An attorney associated with Tigers pitcher Evan Reed confirms that there is an open investigation involving a complaint against the Detroit reliever.

Several media outlets report that a sexual assault complaint has been filed against Reed related to a March 30th incident.

David G. Gorcyca with the firm of Giarmarco, Mullins & Horton, P.C. released this statement to WWJ:

"I was informed this morning that the Detroit Police Department has opened an investigation involving Evan Reed. We are confident that once a thorough and full investigation is completed, Mr. Reed will have nothing to fear. During the infancy of this investigation, no one should formulate any conclusions that a crime has been committed. Mr. Reed is currently on a 7-day West Coast road trip and has not been contacted by the Detroit Police Department. We plan on cooperating with the investigation when the time is appropriate. Until then, no further comment will be made by me or Mr. Reed."

Reports say the incident involving Reed supposedly took place at a downtown location last week.

WWJ Legal Analyst Charlie Langton says authorities have to be careful before jumping to conclusions:

"These are charges that can do more damage to someones reputation just by the mere talking about it and the criminal courts are and police are going to be very very serious in their investigation to make sure they can prove this case beyond a reasonable doubt," said Langton.

The Tigers issued the following statement:

"The organization is aware of the very serious allegation that has been made against pitcher Evan Reed. The allegation is concerning and we are aware of the ongoing investigation. It would not be appropriate for the ballclub to comment further at this time."

Detroit police confirmed to a local TV station that a complaint has been made and said they are actively investigating.

So far no warrants have been issued by the Wayne County prosecutors office.

Reed was acquired by the Tigers in April of 2013, and has appeared in two games this season.
