Report: Sexual Assault Reports Increase At University Of Michigan

ANN ARBOR (AP) - A University of Michigan report says there's been an increase in the number of sexual assaults reported to internal campus investigators.

The Detroit Free Press and The Detroit News say there were 97 reports of sexual assault from July 1, 2014, to June 30, 2015, up from 68 the previous year.

The numbers also show an increase in sexual misconduct reports to the Office for Institutional Equity, which handles investigations. During the time frame, 172 were reported, up from 129 the previous year.

The report says it's believed that the increase is the result of enhanced awareness on campus of sexual misconduct issues and of how to report concerns.

The U.S. Education Department has been investigating how the University of Michigan and dozens of schools nationwide address sexual abuse allegations.
