CBS DETROIT - The Detroit Lions have re-signed veteran cornerback Rashean Mathis to a two-year, $3.5 million deal, according to Pro Football Talk.

Lions general manager Martin Mayhew said last month at the NFL combine that Detroit wanted to hold onto Mathis, 34, who played well for the team in 2014 and mentored second-year cornerback Darius Slay.

"We'd love to have Rashean back," Mayhew said at the time. "He's really been a good leader for us. He's done a phenomenal job, I think, working with Darius Slay.

"He has a lot of position versatility, which we didn't see much of this year because he was starting at outside corner the whole time, but he was a safety in college," Mayhew continued. "He can play inside in the nickel. He's a very versatile guy. He's tough. He's physical. We'd love to have him back."

Mathis played all 16 games for the Lions last season and recorded 51 tackles, defended nine passes, forced one fumble and snagged one interception.
