Red Wings Sign Goaltender Jonas Gustavsson To One-Year Deal
DETROIT – The Detroit Red Wings today signed goaltender Jonas Gustavsson to a one-year contract. In accordance with club policy, additional details will not be disclosed.
Gustavsson, 29, posted a 16-5-4 record in 27 appearances with the Red Wings during the 2013-14 campaign, along with a 2.63 goals-against average and a 0.907 save percentage. Last season, the 6-foot-3, 192-pound goaltender suffered only two regulation losses in his final 13 appearances (8-2-2) and won five-straight starts on two occasions (Nov. 21-Dec. 6, Dec. 19-Jan. 24). Gustavsson started the season on an 8-0-1 run and was named the NHL's First Star of the Week on Oct. 20 after posting a perfect 3-0-0 record with a 1.67 goals-against average and a 0.953 save percentage. Gustavsson also saw his first NHL playoff action last season, starting Games 4-5 against Boston in the opening round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
The Danderyd, Sweden, native made his Red Wings debut during the 2012-13 season, posting a 2-2-1 record with a 2.92 goals-against average and a 0.879 save percentage in seven games. Prior to joining the Red Wings, Gustavsson spent three seasons with the Toronto Maple Leafs, amassing an overall record of 39-45-15 in 107 appearances. Internationally, the netminder represented Sweden at the Olympic Winter Games in 2010 and 2014 (silver) and collected a pair of bronze medals at the IIHF World Championships in 2009 and 2010.
