Record Temps Help Detroit Zoo Set Record Number Of Visits

DETROIT (WWJ) - Some record breaking temperatures leading up to the winter solstice has helped to set some new records at the Detroit Zoo.

The animals are more active when the weather is mild says Detroit Zoo COO Gerry VanAcker and being outside is more pleasant for people.

For the Detroit Zoo that equates to more people coming through the turnstile and visiting the animals.

"November was our busiest November on record - we did over 70,000 guests and the second week, now, of December we've passed the 1.4 million mark," says VanAcker.

That number surpasses the record of 1.3 million set in 1997.

VanAcker says half of the zoo's revenue comes from the gate admissions.
