Rape Kit Testing Brings Charge Against Ex-Con In Connection With 2008 Sexual Assault

SOUTHFIELD (WWJ/AP) - An ex-convict has been charged with rape in Oakland County after investigators tested evidence from 2008 that was left in a police warehouse.

The Attorney General's office says it's one of more than 11,000 sexual assault kits that were left in a Detroit police warehouse until 2009.

Alan Broadnax of Detroit appeared in a Southfield court Thursday on a charge of first-degree criminal sexual conduct. Bond was set at $100,000. It was not immediately known if he has a lawyer who could be reached for comment.

Andrea Bitely of the attorney general's office says this is the first case resulting from the thousands of untested rape kits that were left in a Detroit Police Warehouse

"As the attorney general said this morning many of these offenders, in these cases believe they have gotten away with this crime, it's been so long that they haven't been caught, but that's not true. We are working relentlessly with Prosecutor Worthy and county prosecutors across the state of Michigan to make sure we bring these criminals to justice and get vindication for these victims," said Bitely.

A woman who was 18 at the time said she was sexually assaulted in Southfield. She reported it to police in Hamtramck, but evidence ended up in a Detroit police building with thousands of other kits.

Authorities say testing on all has been completed.
