Pump Malfunction At Grand Rapids Zoo Lagoon Leaves Stingrays, Sharks Dead

GRAND RAPIDS (WWJ/AP) - Eighteen cownose stingrays and three spotted bamboo sharks have died after an apparent pump malfunction in a lagoon at a western Michigan Zoo.

The John Ball Zoo in Grand Rapids reports Friday on its website that one of two pumps for the lagoon shut down late Thursday and the backup alarm system designed to notify staff also did not function properly.

Officials say flooding from thunderstorms that began moving across the state Thursday may have shorted a circuit connected to the pumps.

Staff found the stingrays and sharks dead Friday morning. Low oxygen levels were found in water samples.

Officials expressed "deep sadness" about the incident, posting on Facebook: "The zoo is currently discussing the best way to honor and memorialize these amazing special animals who brought so much joy and amazement to so many people."

"We appreciate the support of our members, donors and community as we work through this difficult situation."

The Facebook announcement has received an enormous response, with more than 1,300 people expressing sadness, 200 leaving comments and 500 sharing the post as of Friday afternoon.

Heather Salander commented: "Very sad :( The stingray lagoon was a wonderful place for us to learn more about these amazing creatures and it was great to see how much the keepers really cared about them all. I know my family really enjoyed seeing and experiencing these beautiful stingrays when we were there. I hope the zoo is double checking all safeguards for the other animals as well as fixing this area. There should be routine checks to prevent issues like this from happening again."

Cindi Tatman wrote: "We were there at opening this morning. My twelve-year-old was heartbroken to find the empty tank. He cried on a keeper's shoulder and gave hugs out to everyone in green who was around. He has aspergers and is afraid of most animals, but the stingrays were some of his best friends. Our sincerest condolences to all off the JBZ staff. Our family is grieving with you."
