Prosecutor Wants State Police To Audit Sheriff's Evidence

LANSING, Mich. (AP) - A central Michigan prosecutor wants state police to conduct an independent audit of a sheriff's office evidence room after it was disclosed a sewage leak and poor record keeping resulted in potentially hundreds of pieces of evidence being compromised.

Ingham County Prosecuting Attorney Gretchen Whitmer told the Lansing State Journal she doesn't have any confidence she has a real sense of the problem. She said communication with the sheriff's office has not been open.

State police are still reviewing the request for an audit. Ingham County Sheriff Gene Wriggelsworth says he's not concerned about an independent audit. He says it will find evidence is missing, and he already knows that.

At least one case has been dismissed, a six-year-old drug case in which charges hadn't yet been filed.
