Project Set To Restore Wildlife Habitat On Harsens Island
CLAY TOWNSHIP (AP) - A project to restore wildlife habitat on Harsens Island and improve recreational opportunities is moving forward.
The Times Herald of Port Huron reports the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says the project will be funded by Great Lakes Restoration Initiative money. Contractors working with the EPA took an airboat tour of the Krispin Drain area this week.
Work initially was budgeted around $850,000, but bids came in at $3.4 million.
Clay Township Supervisor Artie Bryson says the project is a "win-win all the way around" that will boost recreation as well as improve habitat for fish and wildlife. Plans include restoring the four-mile-long drain, which cuts through the middle of Harsens Island.
The island is at the mouth of the St. Clair River, about 30 miles northeast of Detroit.
