Prescribed Ecological Burn Planned For Holland Nature Center

HOLLAND, Mich. (AP) — A prescribed ecological burn will be conducted at a western Michigan nature preserve.

The Holland Sentinel reports that Sunday's burn will be at the Outdoor Discovery Center Macatawa Greenway in Holland.

More than 30 acres are expected to be burned, including meadows, prairies, woodlands and wetlands. Prescribed burns are intended to manage fire-dependent ecosystems in a safe, controlled fashion.

The newspaper reports that suppressing nonnative species with fire also gives native, fire-adapted species the opportunity to take a foothold.
