Preparations For The 2014 Ford Fireworks Display Continue Along The Riverfront

DETROIT (WWJ) - While metro Detroiters bask in the first days of summer - preparations for the 2014 Ford Fireworks show continue along the riverfront.

WWJ was given a sneak peek of the Zambelli pyrotechnic team working behind the scenes on the Detroit riverfront to ensure that the Detroit skyline is lit up with a spectacular display.

Don Morris is a senior director with the Parade Company and he talked about how long preparations have been underway.

"This is not a single day, we started this process 10 days ago," said Morris. "Friday the 13th we actually took possession of this area we started bringing in the barges.

"The three barges are used because we wanted the width ... it's an event for Detroit and all the audiences of Detroit, and surrounding areas, we wanted it as wide as possible."

Morris told Newsradio 950 that the show has grown dramatically over the years and there will be some changes this year, as they look for fireworks to fly higher this year so folks from a wider audience can see the show.

He said this as tubes were being loaded with fireworks in preparation for the Monday launch.

Since the display extends along international waters both Homeland Security and the Canadian government are actively involved in the overall planning.

He says while the weather has created a few delays - they are still on schedule.

Hundreds of thousands of spectators will line the shores of the Detroit River to enjoy the 56th annual Ford Fireworks on Monday, June 23.
The fireworks will be shot from three barges on the Detroit River, beginning at 10:06 p.m. If you want to get a good seat, make sure to get there early because the crowd will grow quickly.
