Prep Football Star Pleads Guilty To Simple Assault In Deal With Prosecutors
DETROIT (WWJ) - Admitting he body-slammed a Cass Tech security guard, high school football star Jayru Campbell pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of simple assault.
In return, prosecutors have agreed that a felony assault charge against him will be dropped. Also part of the deal: Campbell must undergo anger management and counseling.
Campbell will be put on probation under what's known as Holmes Youthful Trainee status, which means that his criminal record will be expunged if he doesn't get into any more trouble before his 26th birthday.
The charges date back to an incident in January, caught cell phone video, that reportedly escalated when Campbell reportedly refused to remove his hood in a school hallway.
Campbell, a junior, is considered one of the top high school quarterbacks in Michigan and had committed to play at Michigan State University in 2015.
Wayne County Judge Tim Kenny said the deal has nothing to do with Campbell's status as a football standout.
Campbell is scheduled to be back in court on May 30.
