Postpartum Depression In Dads? 1 In 4 Men Affected After Birth Of Baby

DETROIT (WWJ) - We've all heard about mothers with postpartum depression -- but did you know that fathers can suffer from it too?

One in four new dads become depressed after the birth of a baby reports WWJ health reporter Dr. Deanna Lites.

It's called paternal postnatal depression or PPND.

While moms can experience postpartum depression right away, Lori Edelson from the Birmingham Maple Clinic says that's not the case in dads.

"Postpartum depression in men may be delayed and onset in months between three and six after the child is born," says Edelson.

Symptoms include anxiety, withdrawal, anger, spending more time at work or loss of interest in work or hobbies.

Edelson says men should communicate their feelings with their spouse.But after a couple of weeks if the symptoms are not improving they should consider seeing a professional.
