Port Huron To Mackinac Sailboat Race Begins

PORT HURON (AP) — With perfect conditions, more than 200 sailboats are off in the open water for the 90th annual Port Huron to Mackinac Island race.

Bell's Brewery sponsors the race, which started Saturday just north of the Blue Water Bridge. The boats are expected to cross the finish line Sunday or Monday.

Race chairman Art LeVasseur says wind at the start was coming from the south-southwest, ideal for the racers. He describes it as "picture perfect."

The winners are based on a handicapping system that considers each boat's ability. One boat has a crew of five adults and six boys, ages 12 and under, from Grosse Pointe Park.

The Bayview Yacht Club in Detroit organizes the event.
