Infant Clings To Life With Severe Head Injury In Suspected Child Abuse Case

PONTIAC (WWJ) - A baby is clinging to life, and his 18-year-old father in behind bars, in what the Oakland County Sheriff's officials believe to be a case of child abuse.

Undersheriff Mike McCabe said the baby's parents brought the 7-month-old infant to a Beaumont Hospital, where the father told doctors he had accidentally struck the child's head on a railing at his home in Pontiac.

McCabe said the child's mother is not a suspect.

"I know the mother does not appear to be involved in any way," McCabe said. "He was alone with the baby."

The baby, McCabe said, is suffering from a severe head injury.

The father was arrested and jailed on an unrelated outstanding warrant as an investigation continues.

"...On the surface — according to the doctors at Beaumont — it appears to be some form of child abuse. The child does have severe head injuries," McCabe said.

No names have been released.
