Police: Trio Robbed, Ripped Backpacks Off Kids Waiting At School Bus Stop

FARMINGTON HILLS (WWJ) - Police say two men and a woman were quickly taken into custody after they allegedly robbed three students waiting for a school bus in Farmington Hills.

The incident unfolded around 7:30 a.m. Thursday in the area of Sedalia Avenue and Ontaga Street, in a neighborhood along Inkster Road just north of 8 Mile Road.

According to police, three teenagers were waiting at a bus stop when a red Pontiac Grand Prix stopped nearby, two suspects got out of the car and approached the teens.

Police say the suspects patted down one of the teens -- looking for valuables and asking for wallets -- and then stole the backpacks from the other two victims while they were still wearing them. The suspects got back into the car and fled the scene.

Two of the teens went home to tell their parents what happened while one of the teens remained at the bus stop. Moments later, police say the suspects pulled back up to the bus stop and one of them returned the backpacks to the teen who was still waiting for the bus.

Police quickly responded to the area and within a short time, a Farmington Hills School Liaison Officer spotted the suspects' vehicle at the Sunoco gas station on Grand River Avenue and Inkster Road.

At that point, the suspects -- a 23-year-old Farmington Hills man, a 21-year-old Redford Township man and a 20-year-old Westland woman -- were taken into custody without further incident. Their names were not immediately released.

Police said the dispatchers and officers involved in the case "did an outstanding job collecting necessary information and quickly responding to the area, arresting all three suspects."

Charges are pending.
