Police Give All-Clear After 'Suspicious Package' Found Near Federal Building In Detroit

DETROIT (WWJ) - Detroit police have given the all-clear after a "suspicious package" found near the McNamara Federal Building downtown turned out to be a bag of clothing.

The bomb squad was called to the scene at Michigan and Cass avenues early Thursday morning after a "bag of interest" was found outside the federal building, according to police.

After about two hours, police said the bag did not contain a threat.

"It had personal items inside, probably one of the homeless population probably dropped it in the vicinity," Police Commander Elvin Barren told WWJ's Mike Campbell.

Barren said regardless of what was in the bag, authorities had to treat the situation as if it were an explosive.

"Anytime there's a package or items near or around our federal buildings, our key infrastructures, that always causes a high-alert status and we have to err on the side of caution," he said.

No injuries were reported.
