Police: Speed A Factor In Crash That Left Woman Seriously Injured

DUNDEE (WWJ) - Authorities believe speed is partially responsible for an early morning crash that left a 24-year-old Monroe woman seriously injured.

The accident took place just after 5 a.m. Saturday on Bigelow Road near Bunce Road in rural Dundee Township.

According to police, 24-year-old Jonathon Schumacher, of Erie, was driving eastbound on Bigelow Road when he failed to negotiate a curve and lost control of his Jeep Cherokee.

The Jeep crossed the centerline and entered a ditch on the north side of Bigelow Road, before crashing into a large tree.

Schumacher suffered minor injuries in the crash but his passenger, Shayna Gilliam, was seriously injured. Both were transported to a local hospital, although Schumacher has since been released. Gilliam's was last reported in stable condition.

Investigators say alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash; however speed does.

An investigation is ongoing. Anyone who might have witnessed the crash or who has other information is urged to contact police at 734-240-7768.
