Mentally Ill Detroit Man Taken Into Custody After 12 Hour Standoff With Police
DETROIT (WWJ) - A man who police say was armed with a gun and barricaded inside a west side Detroit home for 12 hours surrendered without incident and has been taken into custody.
The incident began around 5:40 a.m. Wednesday on Sorrento Avenue near Chalfonte Street, in a neighborhood near Fenkell Avenue and Meyers Road.
Detroit police responded to the home after receiving a call about possible family trouble involving a 54-year-old man with a mental illness. Authorities say the man fired shots inside the home, although other circumstances weren't immediately clear. It doesn't appear that anyone was injured.
Police believed the man was holed-up inside the home with at least two firearms, and refused to give himself up.
