Police: Traffic Stop Leads To Gunfire In Detroit

DETROIT (WWJ) - Detroit police gang squad engaged in gunfire Tuesday night after a traffic stop involving three teens on the city's east side.

It happened just after 9 p.m. when officers pulled over a stolen SUV with three young men inside along Hoover near 7 Mile Road. Two of the teens jumped out of the vehicle took off running in different directions; one of them climbed a fence with an officer hot on his tail.

"The officer, as he prepared to scale that same fence, the suspect turned on him with a handgun," said Police Commander Elvin Barren. "The officer, fearing for his life, did fire two to three rounds at the suspect. Unknown if any rounds took effect."

An adult male was taken into custody and a juvenile was detained at the scene.
