Police: Shooting Gang Related, "We Know Who They Are"

DETROIT (WWJ) - Tears stream down Elaine Redus' face as she talks about her grandson, Darryl Smith, who was shot by suspected gang members Friday night.

Detroit Public Schools Spokesman Steve Wasko said the incident happened Friday night as about 800 people were gathered at East English Village Preparatory Academy, at Cadieux Road and East Warren Avenue.

About 100 people were exiting the school when the shooting took place and the suspects took off in a red or burgundy car.

"We believe that this involved two local street gangs and I'm not going to pay homage or advertise. We know who they are," said Detroit Police Chief James Craig," and they should know that we are not going to rest until we dismantle both gangs."

The individual who was the victim in the incident in the school parking lot after the event was not a student at the school and there is no known connection between that incident and the event taking place at the school.

Anyone who may have information on this incident is asked to call police. READ RELATED STORY HERE
