Police Seek Suspects In Attempted Abduction Of 11-Year-Old Girl In Highland Park

HIGHLAND PARK (WWJ) - Police are investigating the attempted abduction of an 11-year-old girl before school Tuesday morning in Highland Park.

Police Chief Chester Logan says it happened along Oakman Blvd.,, near an abandoned building, at around 6:45 a.m.—  when it was still dark outside.

Logan said the alleged victim, along with her sister and brother, were walking together to catch the school bus when a stranger suddenly appeared.

"The 14-year-old and the 10-year-old were walking in front of the 11-year-old," Logan told WWJ's Vickie Thomas. "And the 11-year-old says that a man jumped out of the bushes and tried to grab her left arm."

Logan said the girl struggled, was able to break free from the man and he ran off.  "She proceeded to the gas station where she got on the bus and told the bus driver what had happened."

The bus driver called the girl's parents. No one was injured.

"She's shaken up," Logan said. "But other than that — I'm certainly not a doctor — but she's with her parents, so she's safe now."

The kids described the alleged attacker as around 6 feet tall with a medium complexion, wearing a beanie-type hat and dark clothing. He had "greasy hands" according to the girl.

The chief says he will be working with Detroit police on this case as it happened right on the Detroit/Highland Park border.

Anyone with information should call police or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP. As always, tipsters to Crime Stoppers may remain anonymous.
