2 Killed In Murder-Suicide Outside Lansing Hospital

LANSING (WWJ) - Two people were fatally shot in a Lansing hospital parking lot in what police believe is a deadly case of domestic violence.

Lansing Police Public Information Officer Robert Merritt said the shooting happened around 7 a.m. Tuesday outside a facility at the McLaren Orthopedic Hospital along Pennsylvania Avenue.

"Reports came in at 7:03 this morning that neighbors in the area heard shots fired," Merritt said. "Our officers arrived on scene and located two subjects, a male and a female, both with apparent gunshot wounds."

Merritt said the 44-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene, while the 43-year-old woman was taken to a nearby hospital where she was pronounced dead.

"We have recovered a firearm and we are confident this is a murder-suicide," Merritt said.

The woman was a hospital employee, although the nature of her relationship with the man was not immediately disclosed. Names have not yet been released.

The hospital was briefly placed under a lockdown as police were investigating the scene.

"Probably 30 minutes the hospital was on a quick lockdown because at the point when we arrived, we were unclear if there was outstanding subjects or an active shooting situation -- and it was quite quick," Merritt said. "Once we determined that we were dealing with just two parties, that hospital went back to being un-locked down."

Additional information on the shooting is expected to be released later Tuesday morning.
