Police Say 10-Year-Old Michigan Girl Made Up Story About Abduction, Escape

GAINES TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - Authorities in western Michigan say a 10-year-old girl made up a story about being abducted by a stranger before escaping.

The Kent County sheriff's office says the girl told investigators she was waiting for a school bus Tuesday morning near her home in Gaines Township when she decided to play in a nearby creek.

Sheriff's officials say the girl admitted she fabricated the story because she didn't want to get in trouble for missing the bus.

The girl had said a man wearing a mask forced her into a white pickup truck and drove around for about an hour before she was able to escape the vehicle and run home. Her mother called police.

Investigators also reviewed surveillance cameras in the area.
